Tax return is one of the biggest legal obligations for working holiday visa holders regardless of the amount of tax refund or payable alongside visas.

Under the new rules, the first $37,000 of taxable income earned while on a working holiday visa is now taxed at a rate of flat 15%. This has eliminated issues about tax residency status. The previous rules still apply for the period from 1 July through 31 December 2016. This means that working holiday makers still need to be taken into consideration for tax residency status.

When you start working, it’s essential to notify you hold working holiday visa and ask your employer to withhold 15% or more tax.

2. Let us prepare your return

Where additional information is necessary, we will contact you within 24 hours. Otherwise, you will receive a full copy of your tax return and an invoice by email within 24 hours.

3. Review your return and make amendments

Review your return to make sure you have included all necessary information, and that everything is correct. If any corrections or amendments are required, you can send them to us by email.

4. We lodge your return with the ATO

The following morning, your tax return will be lodged with the ATO through its Tax Agent Portal. In the event that changes to your return are required after lodgement due to issues such as unreported income, we will lodge an amended tax return with the ATO on your behalf.

5. You receive your notice of assessment

Returns are usually processed in 7 to 12 working days. If you’re due a refund, it will be transferred into your designated bank account; if you owe tax, you will be sent payment advice by the ATO. Once your return is processed, the ATO will send a paper notice of assessment to your postal address with a tax receipt.
